For determination of in situ fibre strength by fracture mirror, fracture energy of as received fibres has to be known. 7 GPa, Fig. 6 . Compared with fibres in a matrix built up by CVI, which is known to be a gentle process referring to fibre damage [ 6 ] , the loss of fibre strength in the examined specimens is 23 quite moderate as loss in fibre strength is similar. From Fig. 6 it can easily be seen that fibre strength is mainly affected by peak temperature of nitridation program. Matrix composition and duration of holding time seems to play a minor role.
