At Florida Tim ran an “option” offense, meaning that on almost every play he had to decide whether to run the ball himself or give it to a running back. Since opponents had to be ready for the run, when he passed, his receivers were usually wide open. Although Florida’s offense had been perfect for Tim’s set of skills, it had not prepared him for pro football, and Tim developed some bad habits, such as holding the ball low and winding up before he threw rather than releasing the pass quickly. ” Most expected Tim to be picked in the third or fourth round of the draft.
One play later, Tim found receiver Eddie Royal down the right sideline. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh defender had him well covered. Tim threw the ball anyway. As Royal turned for the ball in the end zone it dropped perfectly into his hands, just over the defender’s outstretched arm. Touchdown, Denver! It was the Broncos’ first touchdown in their last twenty-one possessions. The play gave Tim and his teammates confidence, and the Denver coaches began to realize that the Steelers didn’t really respect the Broncos’ passing attack and believed all the critics who said Tim couldn’t throw.
Before each play Roy would crouch opposite the center of the opposing team and check to make sure his teammates were in position. When the ball was snapped he would have to fend off blockers and try to make a tackle. Considered one of the leaders of the Golden Bears defense, Roy ranged all over the field, stopping both runs up the middle and chasing down ball carriers when they tried to run around the end. Roy played both positions to near perfection, and the Golden Bears improved from a 3–6 finish the previous year to end the season 7–3.
